Sri Lankan cuisine

Coconut curries, rice, and tropical fruits.

Food history

Why Sri Lankan cuisine is worth exploring

Sri Lankan cuisine reflects Indigenous island traditions, ancient trade across the Indian Ocean and periods of Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. Coconut, rice, spices and preserved fish form the base of a cuisine that is related to, but clearly distinct from, the cuisines of southern India.

Why it is famous

Sri Lankan food is widely recognised for rice and curry, hoppers, kottu roti, string hoppers, lamprais, sambols and coconut-rich curries. What gives the cuisine real depth, though, is the range beyond those classics: market food, home cooking, festive dishes and regional specialities that can change significantly from one place to another.

Regional food story

Jaffna and the north have distinctive Tamil Sri Lankan food traditions; the south uses abundant coconut and seafood; the hill country has its own vegetable and tea-estate influences; Burgher communities contributed dishes such as lamprais.

Wine and drink pairings

What to drink with Sri Lankan food

When pairing wine with Sri Lankan food, match the structure of the dish first: fresh whites for seafood and herbs, medium reds for tomato, spice or roast meat, sparkling wines for fried or salty starters, and sweet or fortified wines for desserts.
